PARKS
I love parks — whether they are natural, cultural, historical, or anything else. Maybe I’m naive, but the words of Theodore Roosevelt resonate deeply with me. I don’t think I agree with all his policies, but I believe he, along with many other conservation pioneers, made a lasting impact on the places we continue to protect. Two quotes of his that I think about often are: “Leave it as it is. You can not improve on it. The ages have been at work on it, and man can only mar it. What you can do is to keep it for your children, your children’s children, and for all who come after you, as one of the great sights which every American if he can travel at all should see,” and “the park is for the benefit and enjoyment of the people”
I used to chase after THE National Parks of the United States, only to realize that they are as much about politics as they are about preservation. Even long ago, the economic interests and greed of society threatened to destroy our wilderness. That’s when I came to understand that there are many other parks, forests, and lands—whether held by the government, the state, or private organizations—that continue to protect and provide access for everyone to enjoy. Then, there’s the vast collection of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, which, though controversial at times, would make for an incredible journey to visit them all.
So, I’ve decided to simplify things. I’m going to list all the Parks (with a capital P to include everything) I’ve been to, though it’s worth noting that my list will likely be more inclusive than the standard IUCN designation and less so than areas protected in a broader sense. This is just a first draft, and I may change my approach later
Ordered somewhat reverse chronologically based on when I visited in each country.
